First-time car buyer: your step-by-step guide
Budget, credit, insurance and the questions to ask. Everything you need for your first purchase.

Buying your first car is exciting and a little intimidating. This is the order we recommend.
1. Set a real budget
Include insurance, fuel, maintenance and registration, not just the monthly payment. As a rule of thumb, total vehicle costs should stay under 15 percent of your take-home pay.
2. Check your credit
Knowing your credit position before you shop shows you what rates are realistic. No credit history? Tell us. We work with lenders who help first-time buyers.
3. Get an insurance quote
Premiums vary widely by model. Get a quote before you commit so there are no surprises.
4. Pick two or three vehicles
Compare reliability, running costs and resale value. Book test drives for each.
5. Ask the right questions
- Is there a full history report?
- Has it been inspected and what was repaired?
- What is the total price including fees?
6. Take your time
A good dealer will never rush you. If you feel pressured, walk away.
