The Ontario winter driving checklist

Seven things to check before the first snowfall so you are not scraping ice in a panic.

Published Sep 8, 2026

Winter in Ontario is not forgiving. A few minutes of preparation in October saves a lot of misery in January.

Seven checks before the first snow

1. **Tires.** Winter tires are the single biggest safety upgrade. Check tread depth and tire age. 2. **Battery.** Cold weather exposes weak batteries. Have yours load-tested. 3. **Wipers and washer fluid.** Replace worn blades and fill with winter-rated fluid. 4. **Brakes.** Make sure pads and rotors are in good shape before you need to stop on ice. 5. **Lights.** Check every bulb, including fog lights and brake lights. 6. **Emergency kit.** Blanket, flashlight, booster cables, a small shovel and water. 7. **Fluids.** Top up coolant with the correct mix and check engine oil.

A note on AWD

All-wheel drive helps you accelerate on slippery roads but does not help you stop. Good tires matter more than the drivetrain.

Buying for winter

Look for heated seats, remote start and a heated steering wheel. They are small things that make January mornings far more bearable.
